THE GARBAGE’S NEGATIVE SEMANTICS AS A POSITIVE ASPECT – A STUDY CASE ABOUT A RECYCLERS ASSOCIATIONS IN THE CITY OF RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL

The present paper deals with a study case with a group of scavengers in the city of Rio de Janeiro. It aims to investigate the garbage’s semantics negative influence in building social capital process among its members. The results suggest a lack of confidence in it (low union social capital) and in the other actors in the recycling chain (low bridge social capital), and the activities of a Non-governmental organization (NGO) indispensable (high connection social capital) to the group’s success. The interest in garbage by different social groups (as something of value) seems to threaten the scavengers’s livelihood so that the garbage’s semantics negative, at this point, tends to be, according to them, more favorable rather than harmful to the livelihood, contrary to initial assumptions . On the one hand this semantics reduces their ability to articulate with the buyer, the other hand is the revulsion feeling that they admit to guarantee their subsistence, as other social groups are also interested in it. Reputation, identification with the work and search for social recognition emerge as aspects that justify the success of the group investigated.Key-Words: Garbage’s semantics. Social Capital.
