Social representations of pickers of a sanitary landfill: living with garbage

Resumo: | The garbage pickers are casual workers in growing, subsisting on scavenging in landfills or dumps, resulting in a peculiar way of life with social psychological and health consequences. The study aimed to describe the social representations of the pickers about the daily work with garbage and social life as scavengers. It’s a qualitative study, based on the Theory of Socials Representations, using the Technique of Content Analysis. Were interviewed twelve collectors of a landfill in Niterói/RJ/Brazil. The socials representations were configured into two symbolic matrices, showing a linkage of garbage in their own image, experiencing stigma, helplessness and feelings of shame in the face of society's prejudice and social exclusion also shows the duality inclusion / exclusion, and dilemmas between necessity of livelihood and coping risk, no prospect of a better future. The collectors reflect the psychosocial impacts suffering for working in the garbage, requiring practices of inclusion by professional and government actions. Keywords: Collectors. Los recolectores de basura son los trabajadores informales, cada vez más crecientes, sobreviviendo de la basura en los rellenos sanitarios o basureros, resultando en una peculiar forma de vida con repercusiones sociales, psicológicas y en la salud. El objetivo fue describir las representaciones sociales de los colectores sobre su trabajo diario con la basura y la vida social como colectores. Estudio cualitativo, basado en la Teoría de las Representaciones Sociales, utilizando la técnica de análisis de contenido. Entrevistados doce recolectores de un relleno sanitario en Niterói/RJ/Brasil. Las representaciones sociales haya configurado en dos matrices simbólicas, muestreándose una conexión de la basura en su propia imagen experimentando estigma, desamparo y sentimiento de vergüenza delante prejuicio y exclusión social; y señalando también a la dualidad de la inclusión/exclusión y el dilemas entre la necesidad de subsistencia y los riesgos. Los colectores reflejan el impacto psicosocial que sufren por trabajar en la basura, lo que requiere acciones de inclusión por profesionales y del gobierno. Palabras clave: Colectores. Representaciones Sociales Os catadores de lixo constituem trabalhadores informais em amplo crescimento que sobrevivem da catação em aterros ou lixões, o que implica um modo peculiar de vida com repercussões sociais, psíquicas e na saúde. O estudo objetivou descrever as representações sociais dos catadores acerca do trabalho cotidiano com lixo e o convívio social como catadores. Trata-se de estudo qualitativo baseado na teoria das representações sociais, no qual se utilizou a técnica de análise de conteúdo. Foram entrevistados 12 catadores de aterro sanitário em Niterói, no Rio de Janeiro. As representações dos catadores configuram-se em duas matrizes simbólicas, as quais mostram a vinculação do lixo à imagem do catador, que vivencia estigma, desamparo e sentimento de vergonha diante do preconceito da sociedade, e exclusão social; além disso, essas matrizes mostram a dualidade exclusão/inclusão e os dilemas entre necessidade de sustento e enfrentamento dos riscos, sem perspectivas de futuro melhor.
