Water access in Brazilian Semi-Arid: an analysis of regional public policies

For over a century the Brazilian steppe climate region is the target of public policies for the supply of its population d'water, but the results so far have proved ineffective. In 2011, the federal government established the Program for Universal Access to Water – Água para Todos, whereby established as primary goal the establishment of cisterns to capture rainwater, and other systems targeted for human consumption. The program aims to promote universal access to water in Brazil, and the focus is on the steppe climate region. The purpose of this paper is to review and analyze key public interventions in the Brazilian steppe climate region to ensure the supply of water from hinterland communities. It appears that part of the activities carried out so far lacksplanning. As for the cisterns, there is a need for additional public policy.
