Resumo: Milk is the product that stands out most in the family farm and has played a key role in generating income from this segment. According to the Agricultural Census of 2006, milk production decreased 25.8% in Brazil. Minas Gerais and Rio Grande do Sul have the largest number of dairy farms, however, Minas had the second largest reduction. Currently, the dairy industry has undergone major changes and these have contributed to the increasing stresses of perspectives which are many rural families. Rapid and significant changes from the 90s - as the end of pre milk prices paid to producers, the commercial opening to the Southern Cone countries, the stabilization of the economy due to the implementation of the Real Plan and the expansion of participation of milk long life, which nationalized the dairy market and increased domestic competition - have lower profit margins per unit of milk produced. Sum up the facts, the requirement of dairy farming, given that the tasks are performed daily, causing most of the families residing in rural areas. Added to this scenario, too, the declining number of children, increasing the level of education and the attractiveness of urban areas. This socioeconomic context reserve several changes and difficulties in relation to the hereditary succession in the units producing milk-based family. In this context, this work aims to study the succession into units producing milk-based family. To this end, we carried out theoretical and empirical research in Leopoldina, a medium-sized city, in the Zona da Mata Mineira, trying to understand how the sociocultural characteristics of the family group, the infrastructure and technological base of the units producing milk influenced the strategies succession in the transmission of the family patrimony. As the research results was confirmed in the research, the hypothesis presented in that cultural factors related to rural culture, as the strong intergenerational hierarchy, characterized by the centrality of the father as well as the submission of women, especially the young, can be considered as factors that influence the succession process. Regarding the second hypothesis presented in the work referred to the consideration technicization as a favorable factor for succession in family production units, we saw that the low level was not a limiting factor in the reproduction of the lifestyle of the family farmer. If the activity itself has limitations begins to search for new production strategies that maintain the condition of the family farmer. In what concerns the dairy business, for having an income generation frequency biweekly or monthly, provides a favorable environment for agriculture in succession, confirming the third hypothesis.

Minas Gerais e Rio Grande do Sul possuem o maior número de propriedades leiteiras, no entanto, Minas teve a segunda maior redução.
