Resumo: | The aim of this study is to analyze the main factors that led the women to participate of the Amazonas State labor market in the 2009. So, first, we analyze the characteristics of this market, comparing with the same market of São Paulo State, the most developed in Brazil, and also by gender and household position. As results, we found the São Paulo labor market has better jobs and more opportunities, and in Amazonas the women are dominant on third sector, but actively participating on industrial activities, although this sector have a higher proportion of men. About the household position, we found the women residing in rural area works the same number of hours that those who lives in urban area and have on overage lower wages and lower levels of education. With regard to female participation, the most important determinants in the decision of a woman to participate or not in the labor market, estimated by probit and logit econometric models were: household income, education, age, marital status, to be family responsible and presence of small children at home. These variables, except small children presence, were also relevant to explain the male participation in the Amazonas State labor market. In the comparison by area, the difference is greater, the results was similar to the urban area with the state overage, but for the rural area the variables number of family members and race were significant variables, and small children at home and marital state were not. In the comparison between Amazonas and São Paulo, we found difference on the significance of the variables number of family members and notwhite people, that was statistically different of zero to São Paulo. |
