Resumo: | The construction of knowledge by children and adolescents has prompted research into various fields. Social knowledge, which is constructed by social transmission and the interaction between subjects and the environment they live in, is extremely important for their development. This proposal originated from an internship experience in early childhood education, from which it was realized that children differentiated men's from women's work, but did not understand well the world of work. The problem presented was: "What are the representations of work by children and adolescents in the age range from 4 to 14 years?" and whether children and adolescents in this age group established relationships between work and gender, distinguishing labor activities carried out by men and women in the polarization between "men's work" and "women's work" according to the sexual division of labor in our society. The hypotheses that guided the study were that children and adolescents create models and representations of work that change as they go through the various stages of development, not as mere copies of reality, but being actively processed by the subjects, and that children and adolescents aged 4 to 14 years incorporate the polarization of the sexual division of labor force in our society into "women's work" and "men's work". The objectives of the research were to identify and analyze the genesis of representations of working class and the sexual division of labor by children and adolescents, aged between 4 and 14 years, in a private school in Viçosa, MG. We used the Piagetian Clinical Method to collect data using clinical interviews consisting of open questions as well as the use of concrete material. Children and adolescents aged 4 to 14 years enrolled in a private school of Viçosa, MG, constituted the sample. We built up the instrument consisting of open questions and concrete material with cards representing labor activities. For data analysis, we used three categories: concept of work, paid vs. unpaid work and sexual division of labor, working out the levels of the subjects' answers. The results showed that the social construction of knowledge goes through phases of evolution, ranging from simpler to more elaborate levels. Our hypotheses were confirmed, since the data revealed evolutionary change in the representations of children and adolescents - it should be pointed out that we find a same child at different levels of understanding. Four levels of understanding of work were identified: Pre-I, I, II and III. This study consisted of a cohort of a broad thematic, therefore, further studies seeking more information on children's and adolescent's understanding on work are needed. Gaining knowledge on subjects' representations is important for realizing values and principles that are assed on to younger generations, which are the basis for their constructions, avoiding the expansion of sexism and stereotypes in our culture, which is often seen as natural. |

Gaining knowledge on subjects' representations is important for realizing values and principles that are assed on to younger generations, which are the basis for their constructions, avoiding the expansion of sexism and stereotypes in our culture, which is often seen as natural. Distinguimos quatro níveis de compreensão sobre trabalho: Pré-I, I, II e III.
