Resumo: The skin pigmentation of ornamental fish is one of the main characteristics determining its market value. During the process of production and trading, ornamental fish are exposed to stress factors as capture, sorting and fluctuations in water quality, causing reduction in skin coloration. To promote and maintain skin coloration in ornamental fish is necessary to use diets containing pigments, since the fish are unable to synthesize them. Among the natural sources of pigments, turmeric (Curcuma longa) stands out for the presence of yellow-orange pigments. Due to the properties antioxidant, antimicrobial and immunostimulant, turmeric also has potential as a growth promoter and reducing stress response. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the effects of turmeric in diets for Trichogaster labiosa as growth promoter, skin staining and reducing stress response. A total of five diets containing 0.0, 1.0, 5.0, 10.0, 25.0 g of rhizome of turmeric powder/kg diet and a diet considered positive control, containing corn and gluten corn meal as a source of carotenoids. In general, there was a reduction in feed intake and growth of fish (weight gain, specific growth rate and final length) fed diets supplemented with turmeric. To the contents of cyan and magenta staining in the dorsal region of male a positive effect of supplementation of turmeric was observed, but did not promote improvement in skin staining when compared to positive control diet. There was no effect of turmeric supplementation on stress responses of fish after transport simulation. Thus, it can be conclued that the Curcuma longa does not act as a growth promoter and stress reducing response to Trichogaster labiosa. The Curcuma longa has potential for skin pigmentation, but supplementation is not recommended in diets for T. labiosa by not promoting pigmentation better than the positive control diet with corn and corn gluten meal.
