Resumo: This study was carried out to evaluate the effect from different methods for estrus detection upon reproductive efficiency of the sows destined to Artificial Insemination (AI). One hundred sixty females pertaining to different calving orders were used. From the weaning, the detection of estrus was performed twice a day. The determination of the estrus was mainly based on immobility of the sow to be tested. The matrices were assigned to two treatments. In the first treatment, the caged animals were submitted to detection of the estrus, by using the reflection from tolerance to man at presence of the male in front of the matrix. In the second treatment, the detection was performed by observing the reflection from tolerance to man, but without the presence of the male. The second treatment females showing no estrus were subsequently conducted to male stall for confirmation. Two inseminations were performed, that is, the first dose was accomplished at the beginning of the estrus and the second dose at 24 hours after the first one. All animals were evaluated for weaning-estrus interval (WOI), estrus repetition rate and the total piglets born by calving. The WOI was 4.0 ± 0.7 and 3.8 ± 0.9 days for animals under treatments 1 and 2, respectively. After AI, the estrus return rates were 5.3 and 6.4% for matricessubjected to treatments 1 and 2, respectively. The average of piglets born by calving of the females under treatments 1 and 2 were 13.1 ± 3.1 and 12.2 ± 3.2 respectively. No variables under study showed difference (P>0.05) between treatments. Therefore, it is concluded the detection of the estrus in caged, by means of the reflex from tolerance to man, and the presence of the male in front of the matrix, can be accomplished without affecting the reproductive efficiency in sows, when the sow is inseminated at the beginning of the estrus and 24 hours later.
