Given the changes that have occurred in Brazil in the early years of the twentieth century, when new artistic trends began to circulate in Europe, most of the Western world was in the midst of social, political, economic, technological and cultural factors that radically altered the way of living and experiencing the world of modern man. Revolutionary inventions like the automobile, the telephone, cinema and radio, have become part of daily life in large cities, increasingly urbanized. It is the moment in Brazil perception of identity as a construct has become agenda of discussion, whose extraordinary interest in popular culture led a small group of intellectuals to seek influence for freedom, renewing, so our literature. Thus, this paper analyzes the book Macunaíma, the hero without any character, published in 1928 by writer Mário de Andrade (1893-1945), with regard to the representation of space in the narrative, to which the author used the expression "geographical purposeful muddle" in order to refer to the juxtaposition of geographic areas covered by Macunaíma, constituting itself a fantastic journey. The absence of a realistic route traversed by the hero, however, does not prevent us from identifying important issues in the book about the rural and urban areas of modern Brazil, in view of, for example, the impact of Macunaíma to reach the city of São Paulo. In this sense, this present study to propose an analysis of the traversed spaces by the hero, with its constituent elements, to identify and discuss relations between narrative and aspects of Brazilian modernization.
