The present work aimed at evaluating the practices and technologies adopted by the pulp and paper industries in Brazil, in order to identify which companies contribute to a better environmental and sustainability performance of the sector. The performance in the environmental sustainability theme depends on the type of activity in which the organization is inserted and the stage of understanding and integration.For the construction of the sector panorama, it was selected seven organizations, which have as final product pulp, paper and its derivatives, and according to the relevance for the sector and the existence of available public information.After analysis of research and the sustainability reports of the organizations, which are representatives of the pulp and paper sector, it was drawn a SWOT matrix related to environmental sustainability aspects (materials, energy, water, biodiversity, emissions, effluents and waste). Beyond the weaknesses and threats of those industries, identified in the SWOT matrix, another point of attention was the need to improve the standardization and dissemination of environmental sustainability information in their annual reports, since these are important analytical tools for the sector.
