The Miridae genus Prepops was described by Reuter in 1905 and is included in subfamily Mirinae, tribe Resthenini. The following combination of characters allow recognition: Color usually black with regions red and orange, pronotum with lateral margins rounded, collar with posterior sulcus interrupted laterally, not reaching the anterior coxal cleft. Prepops comprises 197 species distributed only in American continent, 73 recorded for Brazil, and little information is available on the biology of the species. Although there is an extensive taxonomic bibliography for the genus, the absence of a synopsis that gather information about the group, as well as an identification key dificult the recognition of their species. In this paper, we present the geographic distribution, a key to species and diagnosis for the species of Prepops from Brazil. The information on genus was obtained from the investigation of taxonomic literature and observation of specimens deposited in the collections of the National Museum of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, (MNRJ) and the Regional Museum of Entomology, Federal University of Viçosa (UFVB). We utilize 59 characters in the key to species identification. Prepops bahiensis Carvalho, 1975 was recorderd for the first time for Minas Gerais as Prepops nitidipennis (Reuter, 1910) for Rio de Janeiro. Two species, Prepops bahiensis e Prepops subsimilis (Reuter, 1907) (variety iota) need more studies to confirm its validity.
