Resumo: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of bacterial inoculants containing heterofermentative strains of Lactobacillus brevis and Lactobacillus kefiri on the fermentation profile and aerobic stability of sugar cane silages. Four treatments were evaluated: control (C) - without additives; Additive 1 (LB) - strain of heterolactic bacteria Lactobacillus brevis applied at a rate of 2 x 105 colony forming units/g (CFU/g), Additive 2 (LK) - strains of heterolactic bacteria Lactobacillus kefiri applied at a rate of 2 x 105 cfu/g; Additive 3 (LBK) a blend of Lactobacillus brevis (1 x 105 cfu / g) and Lactobacillus kefiri (1 x 105 cfu / g) was applied at a total rate of 2 x 105 cfu/g. The experimental design was completely randomized with five replicates for each treatment, resulting in 20 silos. After the treatments had been applied, the material was ensiled in 20 L plastic buckets, resulting in bulk density of 600 kg/m3 of fresh weight. In the control silage, there was lower dry matter content (P<0.05), and higher NDF and ADF contents (P<0.05), as well as lower in vitro true digestibility of dry matter (P<0.05). Regardless of treatments, pH did not change. The counts of lactic acid bacteria, and the contents of ethanol and lactic acid were lower (P<0.05) in the inoculated silages. Acetic acid content was higher in the silage trated with L. Kefiri, compared with the control and the silage treated with Lactobacillus brevis, while the 1,2-propanediol content was higher for the treatment with L. kefiri. There was no effect of treatments on aerobic stability of the silages; however, L. kefiri obtained the best result for temperature accumulated for 5 days. The inoculated silages had better fermentation profile, resulting in a better recovery of dry matter and consequent reduction of aerobic deterioration.
