Resumo: The morphology and development of the digestive tract of the insects has been extensively studied, but little attention was given to the development of the rectal pads. These are rectal organs responsible for the water and salts absorption. There are usually six ovoid rectal pads located in the median- anterior portion of the rectum of insects. Rectal pad has three cell types: principal, basal and junctional cells. The arrangements of these three cell types delimit an intrapapillar lumen. The aim of this work is to describe the development of the rectal pads during the post-embryonic development of Melipona quadrifasciata anthidioides and Melipona scutellaris. Specimens were analyzed at the following developmental stage: white eyed, pink eyed, brown eyed and black eyed pupae and adult workers. The development of the rectal pad begins as a thickening of the epithelium in white eyed pupa with 54 hours old. In this stage, there is neither basal cells layer nor the intrapapilar lumen. In the pink eyed pupa the basal layers begin to form and are completely formed at the end of the brown eyed pupa development. In brown eyed pupa stage, the intrapapilar lumen is formed and the junctional cells, which connect the rectal epithelium to the principal cells, are positioned and completely differentiated. Cell death, cell proliferation and a large number of mitotic cells were detected in the whole rectum during pupa development, suggesting that the development of the rectal pads involves cell proliferation, death and differentiation. The origin of the rectal pads is only ectodermic.

The origin of the rectal pads is only ectodermic.
