Resumo: | Considering the importance of bedding in Brazilian industrial poultry (second world producer and first world exporter) and the pressure due to environmental management trends regarding the correct use and disposal of the residues generated by the productive sector, one seek, with this study, to characterize different types of beddings commonly used in the poultry industry of the State of Minas Gerais Brazil (coffee hulls and wood shavings). It was aimed to analyze the effect of the number reuses on litter physical and sanitary qualities, along with the productive performance of the related broiler flocks. One also intended to verify if the ideal number of reuses, according to the sanitary point of view, is in agreement to the number of reuses needed to perform field composting, as indicated in a previous study by Marín (2011). The study was conducted with litter from 32 different broiler houses, being that the following litter characteristics were analyzed: moisture content, pH, litter sanitary quality through the identification of the presence of Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp., the incidence of footpad dermatitis and productive performance of birds. For the coffee hulls litter, one observed that its moisture content decreased with the increase in the number of reuses. However, no effect of the number of cycles of reutilization was observed on either litter pH or bird production performance in any of the types of substrates studied. Regarding the sanitary conditions, it was observed that the coffee hulls litter presented a reduction of about 29 percent points on the probability of occurrence of Salmonella spp as compared to the wood shavings litter; nevertheless, no statistical difference was observed on bacterial occurrence with Salmonella spp for litters of different types or numbers of reutilization. The presence of Escherichia coli was detected in litters of all cycles, including fresh litter, for both types of substrate (coffee hulls and wood shavings). For the litter containing wood shavings, the level of concentration was 3 (considered high) in all cycles of reutilization; regarding the litter containing coffee hulls, the critical concentration level only occurred at the end of the second cycle, from which concentration levels exceeded the threshold considered sanitarily safe. The occurrence of footpad lesions was detected in broilers of barns with both types of litter, being that the effect of the number of cycles of reutilization of the litter on its degree of incidence was detected only for the litter with coffee hulls (increase of 30% between the first and second reuses, from which the concentration level tended to stabilize). From the sanitary point of view, the best moments to remove litters with coffee hulls and wood shavings are at the end of the second and first cycles of reutilization, respectively. This outcome is in agreement to the results presented by Marín (2011) regarding the best moment to proceed litter field composting. |
