Resumo: Cardiovascular diseases are the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in Brazil. When occurs the presence of high waist circumference associated with at least two other cardiovascular risk factors in the same individual, have the metabolic syndrome (MS), which further increases the risk of mortality. Some labor occupations provide a high risk to individuals, due to the inherent characteristics of the profession. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors and MS in the population of teachers of basic education of Viçosa-MG. For data analysis, the results were divided into three chapters: with the chapter 1 had the objective of verifying the prevalence of MS, as well as the risk factors associated with the presence of this syndrome; the chapter 2 aimed to determine the prevalence of overweight and obesity, besides the association between an anthropometric indicator of overall obesity with cardiovascular risk factors; and the chapter 3 had the aimed to verify the relationship of the number of steps daily on cardiovascular risk factors. We evaluated 200 teachers from state and municipal network, with mean age 43.2 + 10.2 years. Was examined the body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), abdominal circumference, waist-hip ratio, percentage body fat (%BF), systolic blood pressure and diastolic, glucose, total cholesterol, lipoprotein of high (HDL-C) and low density, atherogenic index of plasma, non- HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, smoking, as well as the Framingham score and number of daily steps. Thus, it was observed that the prevalence of MS was 20%. Since, the most prevalent risk factors were high CC, followed by low HDL- C, high triglycerides, hypertension and diabetes mellitus. In addition, age, nutritional status and physical activity level were the variables associated with SM. Was found high prevalence of overweight/obesity (58%), with the index of general obesity (BMI) associating with main cardiovascular risk factors. However, measures of central adiposity showed a greater explanatory power on biochemical parameters. Only 26.5% of teachers exceeded 10,000 steps daily, with this group having lower BMI, %BF and triglycerides. On the other hand, xii those who did not exceed demonstrated higher odds of overweight and dyslipidemia. With the number of daily steps presenting a weak inverse correlation with anthropometric indicators (BMI, %BF and WC). Given the above, it is concluded that teachers of basic education of Viçosa-MG showed a prevalence of MS similar to that observed in other studies, being the CC high the risk factor most found. With a high prevalence of overweight/obesity, and the indicator of general obesity (BMI) showing association with major cardiovascular risk factors. Moreover, among the teachers that exceed 10,000 steps daily is found a lower BMI, %BF, and triglycerides.
