Resumo: The objective of this study was to characterize the clinical alterations on laboratory male rats with diabetes and on healthy male rats, treated with aqueous infusion of powdered fruits of Momordica charantia L. In the biological assays, 16 male rats were induced to the experimental diabetes though intraperitoneal injection of alloxan in a dose of 75 mg/kg. The blood glucose level was verified on the sixth day after the induction and the animal with glucose superior to 180 mg/dL were distributed in two groups: Diabetic Group and Diabetic with infusion of Momordica charantia L. group (Diabetic + MC). After dividing these two groups, two others groups of healthy animals were formed: Control group and Control with infusion of Momordica charantia L. group (Control + MC). Groups with infusion of Momordica charantia L. were received a diary dose of 1 mL/250g of corporal weigh of the 10 % prepared infusion for 25 days. During the experiment were studied the following clinical parameters: weigh, hydric ingestion, alimentary ingestion, diuresis and general state. On the final of the experiment the following laboratorial dosages were realized: blood glucose level, glucagon like peptide -1 (GLP-1), cholesterol, triglycerides, alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST). It was verified weight increase in Control an Control + MC groups with bigger percentile increase (13.89%) in the Group Control. The Diabetic group presented a 2.68% reduction and Diabetic + MC a reduction of 11.79% in the average of the weight of the animals after 25 days of experiment. The Diabetic group presented an average increase of 34.82% in the blood glucose level, being that the value remained in raised levels, above of 280 mg/dL. Diabetic + MC group presented a lesser average percentile variation for the blood glucose level, with an average increase of 27.05% in the glucose level. The results had demonstrated that the average of the blood levels of the GLP-1 in the animals of Diabetic + MC group was 32.73% greater when compared with the Diabetic group. The values of ALT was significant difference, the average of the ALT of the Control group was greater when compared with the Diabetic group, what can characterize a diabetic disease with liver alterations. However, it did not have significant difference in the ALT of the Control and Diabetic groups, when compared with the Control + MC and Diabetic + MC groups respectively, evidencing that the infusion of this plant in these experimental conditions had not modified this analyzed liver´s functions. The Control + MC group presented cholesterol reduction of 6.88% in comparison with the Control group. Diabetic and Diabetic + MC groups had not presented significant difference between its averages for cholesterol. Diabetic + MC group presented a reduction of 7.63% in the average of the values of triglycerides in relation to the Diabetic group. These results reveal that the aqueous infusion of powdered fruits of Momordica charantia was capable to increase levels of the GLP-1 and promoting a decrease of blood glucose levels of animals with diabetes. Moreover, was observed reduction of the weight profit, improves in the important clinical parameters, and no alterations in the liver´s function was observed. It is possible to conclude that the Momordica charantia L. has proper characteristics for control of the typical parameters of diabetes in these study conditions.

It is possible to conclude that the Momordica charantia L. has proper characteristics for control of the typical parameters of diabetes in these study conditions.O objetivo deste estudo foi caracterizar as alterações clínicas e laboratoriais em ratos com diabetes e ratos sadios submetidos à infusão aquosa do pó dos frutos de Momordica charantia L. Nos ensaios biológicos, 16 ratos foram induzidos ao diabetes experimental por via intraperitoneal de aloxano na dose de 75 mg/kg.
