The Role of Fear in History: Heterophobia and mass paranoia in the making of racist violence

Resumo: In this article, based on the perspective of Historical Sociology, we present some considerations about the role of fear in historical experience. Emotions and feelings, such as fear, heterophobia and mass paranoia have been and are responsible for the production and reproduction of innumerable historical cases of racist violence. For the development of the analysis, we proceed initially to a conceptualization of racism, incorporating the key of fear in the theoretical definition of the phenomenon. Next, a set of historical examples in which fear and mass paranoia played an active role in the production of racisms and violence are discussed. Finally, some recent examples that demonstrate the persistence of racism, violence and fear in contemporary times are presented. The discussion makes explicit the importance of taking the role of fear seriously in the analysis of historical experience, demonstrating the need for a conceptual definition of racism that takes into account the key of fear, besides questioning the possibilities of suppression and elimination of racism in human societies.

Las emociones y sentimientos como el miedo, la heterofobia y la paranoia colectiva fueron y son responsables de la producción y reproducción de numerosos casos históricos de violencia racista. Para el desarrollo del análisis, inicialmente se procedió a una conceptualización del racismo, incorporando la clave del miedo en la definición teórica del fenómeno. En seguida, se presentan y discuten un conjunto de ejemplos históricos en los que el miedo y la paranoia colectiva desempeñaron un papel activo en la producción de racismos y violencia. Finalmente, se presentan algunos ejemplos recientes que demuestran la persistencia del racismo, de la violencia y del miedo en la contemporaneidad. La discusión explicita la importancia de tomar en serio el papel del miedo en el análisis de la experiencia histórica, demostrando la necesidad de una definición conceptual del racismo que tenga en cuenta la clave del miedo, además de cuestionar las posibilidades de supresión y eliminación del racismo en las sociedades humanas. Neste artigo, embasado na perspectiva da Sociologia Histórica, apresentamos algumas considerações a respeito do papel do medo na experiência histórica. As emoções e os sentimentos, tais como o medo, a heterofobia e a paranoia coletiva foram e são responsáveis pela produção e reprodução de inúmeros casos históricos de violência racista. Para o desenvolvimento da análise, procedemos inicialmente a uma conceitualização do racismo, incorporando a chave do medo na definição teórica do fenômeno. Em seguida, são apresentados e discutidos um conjunto de exemplos históricos em que o medo e a paranoia coletiva desempenharam um papel ativo na produção de racismos e violência. Por fim, são apresentados alguns exemplos recentes que demonstram a persistência do racismo, da violência e do medo na contemporaneidade.
