Resumo: | The language of materiality offers clues to understanding the relations between the Tupiniquim and the Portuguese in São Paulo, Brazil. They articulated practices in a bilingual environment, whose historical trajectory led to the emergence of what Brazilian linguistics called Língua Geral Paulista (LGP), considered a linguistic phenomenon of the 17th century. In this paper, we develop the hypothesis that LGP was a process that started in the 16th century, as a result of the protagonism of Tupiniquim women in social relations, food security, and the transformation of Portuguese materialities, such as ceramic vessels dated to before 1560. This evidence contradicts the dominant narrative that women were monolingual. |

This evidence contradicts the dominant narrative that women were monolingual.
