The “writing of culture” in the academic production of Xakriabá

This paper seeks to analyze the undergradute thesis, produced by Xakriabá students in the Intercultural Training of Indigenous Educators from the Federal University of Minas Gerais, in order to establish a dialogue with the anthropological discipline focusing on the concept of “writing culture”. Some classic studies point the invention of traditions, the invention of culture and its use as a weapon in guaranteeing rights. The role of ethnographic writing in these inventions and disputes has also been discussed for many decades. It is already commonplace to say that “ethnography is always entangled in the invention and not in the representation of cultures” (Clifford 2016, 32), but what happens when this “writing culture” is made by indigenous academics? This is the question that guides this work. For this analysis, 11 final papers were selected, defended from 2016 to 2019, which directly address topics identified with Xakriabá culture or tradition. Among the main results, we highlight the theoretical contribution of Xakriabá academic production to the concept of culture, the reflections raised by the use of the ethnographic method in research and the stylistic innovations produced by indigenous academic writing.
