Xakriabá indigenous art: among jaguars, fish, clay joãos and other-than-humans

Resumo: The Xakriabá people live in the municipality of São João das Missões, north of the state of Minas Gerais, with a population of approximately 14 thousand people, distributed across 40 villages. The main challenges faced by the people are the lack of water, the resumption of ancestral and territorial practices to have access to natural resources important for their subsistence and, as in the past, to once again access the São Francisco River. Currently, Xakriabá indigenous art represents a fighting tool and has contributed to denouncing the centuries-old violence suffered by the entire people. The Xakriabá artists are inspired by the multispecies relationships of their people and the cerrado biome of northern Minas Gerais, to express their experience with the land, water, animals, trees and their enchantments. This photo essay presents images of utensils made from wood and clay, such as moringas with lids of different animals, as well as lids with enchanted beings, such as the moringa jaguar cabocla and the moringa bicho-man.

Actualmente, el arte indígena Xakriabá representa una herramienta de lucha y ha contribuido a denunciar la violencia centenaria que sufre todo el pueblo. Los artistas de Xakriabá se inspiran en las relaciones multiespecies de su pueblo y el bioma del cerrado del norte de Minas Gerais, para expresar su experiencia con la tierra, el agua, los animales, los árboles y sus encantamientos. Este ensayo fotográfico presenta imágenes de utensilios elaborados en madera y barro, como moringas con tapas de diferentes animales, así como tapas con seres encantados, como la moringa jaguar cabocla y la moringa bicho-hombre.O povo Xakriabá vive no município de São João das Missões, norte do estado de Minas Gerais, tendo uma população de aproximadamente 14 mil pessoas, distribuídas por 40 aldeias. Os principais desafios enfrentados pelo povo são a falta de água, as retomadas de práticas ancestrais e territoriais para ter acesso a recursos naturais importantes para a sua subsistência e para, assim como no passado, novamente acessar o rio São Francisco. Atualmente, a arte indígena Xakriabá representa uma ferramenta de luta e tem contribuído para denunciar as violências seculares sofridas por todo o povo. Os artistas Xakriabá se inspiram nas relações multiespécies do seu povo e no bioma do cerrado do norte de Minas Gerais, para expressar a experiência com a terra, a água, os animais, as árvores e seus encantados.
