The tribute that this article pays to teacher José Geraldo de Sousa Jr. is a historical record based on a survey of his various participations in public hearings held at the National Congress between 1987 and 2021. It has resulted in his participation in various events (public hearings, seminars) and in various commissions, at the invitation of a plurality of parliamentarians, involving themes related to the protection of human rights, the defense of democracy and public ethics. The unexpected occurred when the meeting minutes, which stated their participation in defense of the instruments of democratic participation during the debates of the Subcommittee on Individual Rights and Guarantees of the Constituent Assembly, in 1987, were found. The article intended to identify and purposely offer the reading from the main excerpts of the narrative traced by the honored person, promoting the dialogue between the Academy and the Legislative Power as a way to affirm the relevance of democracy both for political action and in the legal formation of rights defended as an instrument of freedom. The result was a common thread that transports democratic values through the uncontested defense of active citizenship and the support of the collective subject of rights that emerges and leads the transformation process in search of social justice, that is background of this principal work: The Law Found on the Street.
