It presents a documentary research methodology of architectural projects through the experience in the Private Works collection of the Public and Historical Archive of Ribeirão Preto for the development of the doctoral thesis "Home and documentation: history told through a collection of projects" defended in December 2020 at the Institute of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of São Paulo (IAU-USP). It brings the trajectory of this research that begins with the survey of the documental mass through the digitization of the collection, which was non-existent until then, goes through the criteria used in the systematization of data - including the definition of categories, which allowed the analysis of almost four thousand processes - and it flows into the axes of analysis, which made it possible to structure the writing of the thesis by compiling the information extracted from the drawings. In addition to this collection, it exposes how other documentation, from this and other institutions, were used with the intention of crossing research sources in quantitative and qualitative analyses. It ends by showing a compendium of the results obtained by the doctoral thesis, emphasizing the importance of documentary research for the construction of a narrative of the historiography of broad and inclusive architecture based on documentary evidence.
