Production of a modern capital: political concessions and contradictions in the choice of artists and architects in the construction of Brasília

Resumo: Starting from a look at a Brazilian city that has been modern since its conception – Brasília – this article aims to understand a city whose urbanism, architecture and art result from a series of ideas, values, discourses and wills determined by dominant groups. Based on Mário Pedrosa and Ferreira Gullar as central figures for the construction of a critical historiography of Brasília, the aim is to re-discuss the process of conception and representation of the capital during the period of its construction and inauguration in the field of architecture and plastic arts. So we observe how much and in what aspects the design of the capital was manipulated in order to meet the “customers’ taste”. In this case, considering the proportions, to the taste of numerous and varied customers, as well as the pretensions of the jury of the judging committee, JK's predispositions, and mainly, the taste of the international perspective. A revisit of this path leads to the identification of ambiguities, gaps and reasons for concessions and demands met; presenting how amidst the aesthetic and conceptual quality of the city there was also a fertile ground for contradictions arising from the agencies that surrounded it, in part not consistent with the desired modernity project itself.

A partir de Mário Pedrosa y Ferreira Gullar como figuras centrales para la construcción de una historiografía crítica de Brasília, el objetivo es volver a discutir el proceso de concepción y representación de la capital durante el período de su construcción e inauguración en el campo de la arquitectura y Artes plásticas. Así observamos cuánto y en qué aspectos se manipuló el diseño de la capital para satisfacer el “gusto de los clientes”. En este caso, considerando las proporciones, el gusto de numerosos y variados clientes, así como las pretensiones del jurado del comité de jueces, las predisposiciones de JK, y principalmente, el gusto de la perspectiva internacional. Una revisión de este camino conduce a la identificación de ambigüedades, lagunas y razones de las concesiones y demandas cumplidas; presentando cómo en medio de la calidad estética y conceptual de la ciudad también había un terreno fértil para las contradicciones que surgían de las agencias que la rodeaban, en parte no consistentes con el proyecto de modernidad deseado en sí.Partindo de um olhar sobre Brasília, uma capital brasileira que se apresenta moderna desde sua concepção, este artigo visa à compreensão de uma cidade cujo urbanismo, arquitetura e arte resultam de uma série de ideias, valores, discursos e vontades determinadas por grupos dominantes. Tendo como base Mario Pedrosa e Ferreira Gullar como figuras centrais para a construção de uma historiografia crítica de Brasilia, busca-se rediscutir o processo de concepção e representação da capital no período de sua construção e inauguração no campo da arquitetura e das artes plásticas. Assim observamos o quanto e em que aspectos a concepção da capital foi manuseada à vista de se atender ao “gosto do freguês”. Neste caso, considerada as proporções, ao gosto de numerosos e variados fregueses, como as pretensões do júri da comissão julgadora, as predisposições de JK, e principalmente, o gosto do olhar internacional.
