Resumo: The understanding of the relations of rural com-munities with the space they use and produce is essential to any actions of improvement of their living conditions. Technical surveys and diagnos­tics traditionally employed in the fields of architecture, urbanism and planning do not accomplish such an understanding. This paper aims at a method of socio-spatial survey broader than the conventional approach, but feasible in a comparatively brief fieldwork. The method is discussed by drawing on its application, by the Research Group MOM, in the village Quartel do Indaiá, in Diamantina, Minas Gerais. The paper begins with the presentation of this methodological proposal, followed by a description of the field work and a compilation of the collected and interpreted data. The last session is a critical discussion of the research process, including some pointers on its future development.

Levantamentos técnicos e diagnósticos tradicionalmente empregados nas áreas de Arquitetura, Urbanismo e Planejamento não bastam para isso. O presente artigo visa a um método de levantamento sócio-espacial mais abrangente do que essa abordagem convencional, mas viável num trabalho de campo relativamente breve. O método é discutido a partir de sua aplicação, pelo Grupo de Pesquisa Morar de Outras Maneiras - MOM, ao vilarejo Quartel do Indaiá, no município de Diamantina, Minas Gerais. O artigo inicia pela apresentação dessa proposta metodológica, seguida de uma descrição do trabalho de campo e uma compilação dos dados levantados e interpretados.
