Atualmente instituições de reconhecimento nacional e internacional propõem diretrizes às bibliotecas escolares para que estas assumam sua responsabilidade na formação de cidadãos críticos, conscientes e efetivos usuários da informação. Tais objetivos demandam à biblioteca repensar seus serviços e oferecer serviços de atividades culturais como imprescindíveis ao cumprimento de seu papel. O presente trabalho de caráter exploratório busca, através da literatura existente, aprofundar a discussão sobre o papel das atividades culturais no êxito das bibliotecas escolares frente a sua finalidade dentro do sistema escolar. Utilizou-se questionário para coleta de dados a fim de confrontar os dados da realidade com a teoria da revisão de literatura. Observa-se na prática que as bibliotecas escolares pesquisadas estão distantes de cumprirem seu papel conforme as diretrizes estabelecidas, que não compreendem o papel e a importância das atividades culturais e que atuam isoladas perpetuando arcaicos valores e estereótipos. Current national and international institutions propose guidelines for school libraries to form responsible, conscientious citizens and information seekers. These goals require school libraries weigh about themselves. Cultural activities are essential for achieving their goals, so they have to think on their services and offer cultural activities such as school library services. The present work sought to verify the purpose of cultural activities in school libraries and how cultural activities assist school libraries in their goals. We performed a data collection, where the instrument used was a questionnaire with open, closed and multiple choices. It may be noted that in practice libraries are far from the goals set by the institutions. School libraries do not understand the cultural services and operate isolated from the school system, perpetuating stereotypes and archaic values.
