No âmbito da gestão urbana é possível perceber como se apresentam as diversas influências do desenvolvimento sustentável, por essa razão, permeando pela conceituação e eficiência das cidades sustentáveis, o presente trabalho expõe a importância da Gestão Ambiental Urbana como ferramenta para gerir cidades sustentáveis, porém, não busca se estender sobre as questões alarmantes das cidades. Mediante a apresentação de indicadores de cidade sustentável, que tem como propósito avaliar o desempenho sustentável das cidades, obtêm-se informações que auxiliam na criação de instrumentos de controle aplicáveis na gestão pública, por meio do método do Ciclo PDCA. Esse trabalho é válido para órgãos governamentais e gestores que norteiam o urbanismo das cidades, podendo, por meio da Gestão Ambiental Urbana, melhorar o planejamento e implementação do desenho urbano orientado pelo desenvolvimento sustentável. De forma a melhorar a qualidade de vida da população e aprimorando os projetos que futuramente serão executados, contribuindo para a propagação da sustentabilidade. Within the scope of urban management it is possible to perceive how the diverse influences of sustainable development present themselves, for this reason, permeating trough the conceptualization and the efficiency of sustainable cities, this work exposes the importance of Urban Environmental Management as a tool to manage a sustainable city in the 21st century, still, it doesn’t seek to prolong itself about the alarming issues of the cities, but to discourse over how cities have become the sustainable future of our planet. Through the presentation of sustainable city indicators, with the purpose of evaluating the sustainable performance of cities, information is gathered to help with the creation of control instruments applicable within the public management, through the PDCA Cycle method. Therefore, the product of this work will be valid for governmental agencies and managers that aim to guide the urban planning of cities, being able, through Urban Environmental Management, improve the planning and implementation of urban design guided by sustainable development, improving the life quality of the population and improving the projects that will be executed in the future, in order to contribute to the propagation of sustainability.
