An exploratory study about remote English language teaching in potiguar public school in time of Covid-19 pandemic (2020-2021)

Resumo: The purpose of this study is to characterize the remote teaching of the English language in the public school of Rio Grande do Norte in times of the Covid-19 pandemic (2020-2021). The research is based on recent reflections on remote teaching, an emergency form of teaching adopted by schools, institutes and universities during social distancing in times of health crisis. Methodologically, an exploratory qualitative study was carried out, through the application of an on-line questionnaire (Google Forms) with English language teachers from the 13th Directorate of Education and Culture (DEC) of the state of Rio Grande do Norte (RN), Brazil. Data analysis reveals that remote teaching of the English language in public schools in Rio Grande do Norte is characterized by the use of different digital technologies, recording video lessons and sending digital content and printed material to students. The data also show the lack of access to the internet, the low interest of students and the absence of receiving teacher training to work in remote teaching. It was concluded that remote teaching of English in public schools faces challenges that make access to language learning in a broad and democratic way unfeasible.

Fundamentam a pesquisa recentes reflexões sobre o ensino remoto, forma emergencial de ensino adotada por escolas, institutos e universidades durante o distanciamento social em tempos de crise sanitária. Metodologicamente, foi realizado um estudo qualitativo de caráter exploratório, por meio da aplicação de um questionário on-line (Google Forms) com professores de Língua Inglesa da 13ª Diretoria de Educação e Cultura (DIREC) do estado do Rio Grande do Norte (RN), Brasil. A análise dos dados revela que o ensino remoto de língua inglesa na escola pública potiguar caracteriza-se pelo uso de tecnologias digitais diversas, pela gravação de videoaulas e pelo envio de conteúdos digitais e material impresso aos estudantes. Os dados evidenciam, também, a falta de acesso à Internet, o baixo interesse dos estudantes e a ausência do recebimento de capacitação docente para atuação no ensino remoto.
