Resumo: This article presents the results of a research study on teaching the use of a monolingual English dictionary. The study investigated what the students knew about dictionaries and then taught them reference skills in using this tool. The instruments used to collect the data were: a questionnaire, a pre and post test, treatment with activities using a monolingual dictionary, and an interview. The data revealed that (1) learners neither had monolingual dictionaries nor used any; and, (2) they had not received any orientation on how to use this tool properly. By the end of this study the learners were more aware of the importance of using monolingual dictionaries in learning a foreign language, and of the need to develop dictionary skills.

By the end of this study the learners were more aware of the importance of using monolingual dictionaries in learning a foreign language, and of the need to develop dictionary skills.Este artigo tem como escopo apresentar os resultados de uma pesquisa realizada sobre o ensino do uso de dicionário monolíngue (DM) para aprendizes de língua inglesa em sala de aula, na qual se procurou investigar o conhecimento que os aprendizes tinham sobre dicionário e desenvolver nesses aprendizes as habilidades de uso dessa ferramenta. Os dados foram coletados através de um questionário, um pré-teste, um tratamento com atividades, um pós-teste e uma entrevista. Os dados revelaram que (1) os aprendizes não tinham e não conheciam nenhum DM de inglês, (2) tampouco receberam orientação de uso dessa ferramenta. Ao final desse estudo, percebemos que os aprendizes estavam mais conscientes da importância do DM para a aprendizagem de uma língua e da necessidade de desenvolver as habilidades de uso desse material.
