The dream of being a metal worker: dimensions of youth experience in the industrial region of ABC Paulista

Resumo: This article, which fall within the field of Sociology of Education and the Generations, aims to discuss the youth experience in a poor neighborhood of São Bernardo do Campo, strongly affected by changes occurring in the labor market in the ABC Paulista region. The methodology used was essentially qualitative, developed through field observations and biographical interviews, conducted with family members (parents and children) and different leaders of the neighborhood. We conclude that the socialization of these young people was strongly focused on the job, especially around the "ideal metallurgical work", which influenced their educational investments and how they and their families conceive their future projects.

La metodología utilizada fue esencialmente cualitativa, desarrollada a través de observaciones de campo y entrevistas biográficas, realizada con miembros de la familia (padres e hijos) y diferentes líderes del barrio. Llegamos a la conclusión de que la socialización de los jóvenes se ha centrado fuertemente en trabajo, especialmente alrededor del "ideal del trabajo metalúrgico", que influyó en sus inversiones en educación y cómo ellos y sus familias conciben sus proyectos futuros.Este artigo, que se insere no campo da Sociologia da Educação e das Gerações, tem por objetivo discutir a experiência juvenil em um bairro popular de São Bernardo do Campo, fortemente afetado pelas transformações ocorridas no mercado de trabalho na região do ABC Paulista. A metodologia utilizada foi essencialmente qualitativa, desenvolvida por meio de observações de campo e entrevistas de caráter biográfico, realizadas com membros das famílias (pais e filhos) e diferentes lideranças do bairro.
