DISTRIBUTIVE JUSTICE:: PERSONALITY VARIABLES AND SITUATIONAL VARIABLES

This research investigates the influence of personality variablesand situational variables on the social behavior of justice, specifically,on the preference for certain norms of distributive justice in a situationof reward allocation. The personality factors singled out for study arerationality/emotionality, need for achievement and need for affiliation. Onthe other hand, the situational variables refer to interpersonal relations associatedto the functioning of groups, such as suggested by Deutsch. Theresults, obtained with 267 undergraduate students, give empirical supportto Deutsch's hypotheses, according to which the nature of social relationsand that of the main objectives that govern the group behaviour determinethe choice of the value base of justice which regulates the allocation of goods and social conditions among the members of the group. However,only a few indications were found insofar as an eventual association betweencertain personality variables and allocation behavior.
