Resumo: This study aimed to know the experience and expectations of single women who are in the queue for adoption. Three women aged over 50, with good educational level and high income participated. A sociodemographic questionnaire and an interview were used. Content analysis showed that women felt ready to be mothers, saying that they did not need support for childcare. The characteristics of the child were similar to those of the predominant profile of the adoptive couples and they were different from the profile of the young eligible for adoption, favoring the slowness of the process. Proposals to improve the adoption process, such as improvement in the work of staff and greater debate about the characteristics of children are presented.
