Resumo: This study reports a research corried out with 258 candidatesto admission in a Federal University. The grades on the entranceexams were correlated with scores on self-steem, internal locus of control, incentive value of studies, need achievement, and the subjetive probabilityof success in future tests. In addition, the differences between themeans of high and low scores in each of these variables were tested. The results showed that the performance in a highly competitive task ispositively and significantly associated with intemality, incentive value ofstudies, need achievement, and the subjective probability of future success, with a significant multiple correlation index between these variablesand the grades which were obtained on the entrance exams.
