Resumo: A review of the literature on the quantification of the lawof effect was conducted searching for logically legitimate arguments. Itis concludedthat: (a) Herrnstein's equation is based on a premisewhichpressuposes the matching principie, and (b) that this pressuposition isuntenable. The matching principie is an empirical statement which isnot deducible from the adopted premises and therefore should besubmitted to empirical test. Reformulations of Herrnstein's equationsare reviewed and it is concluded that BaunYs generalized matchingequation has predictive value.

Reformulations of Herrnstein's equationsare reviewed and it is concluded that BaunYs generalized matchingequation has predictive value.RESUMO - A partir de argumentações logicamente legítimas, analisasse a literatura referente à quantificação da lei do efeito e conclui-se que: (a) a equação proposta por Herrnstein está baseada em premissa que pressupõe o princípio de igualação; (b) essa pressuposição não se sustenta, e o critério para aceitar ou não a equação é empírico e não um critério lógico. O princípio de igualação constitui uma sentença empírica não dedutível das premissas adotadas e deve ser submetido a teste empírico.
