Resumo: The aim of this study was to compare the ability of deaf and normal subjects from 14 to 20 years of age insolving syllogistic problems with known, unknown and contrary fact contents. Premises were presented to half of the subjectsof each group within a context of make-believe play or in an ordinary verbal mode. For each group of subjects the problemswere presented in its linguistic variety: Brazilian sign language and Portuguese oral language. All responses were coded in twoways: for response correctness and for the type of justification given for the response. The results showed that deaf subjects(sign language and oral language users) as well as normal subjects could solve the problems adopting a theoretical attitude evenwhen the verbal mode was used and the contents were unknown or contrary to their empirical experiences.
