FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS AND SOCIALIZATION OF CHILDREN WITH EMPLOYED AND NON-EMPLOYED MOTHERS

Resumo: The study was designed to investigate, among employedand non-employed mothers, the woman's satisfaction withher work, the reasons that lead her to work, the mother's perceptionof the husband's attitudes regarding the care of the family andengagement with the children, the extent to which the mother fostersthe child's independence, main authority in family and differentialpractices of rearing, according to the mother's perception.The samples consisted of 30 full-time, 30 part-time mothers, and30 non-employed mothers. A questionnaire was used to collectthe data. It was observed that the main reason for mother's employmentwas an association of financial need with self-realization.Non-employed mothers felt less satisfied, while employedmother had a more positive interaction with children, whose independencewas also more stressed. Comparing the mother's perception,it was observed that employed mother's husbands weremore involved with the children's socialization. It was also observedthat obedience was more frequent among female childrenin all groups, according to the mother's report. The data suggestthat mother's employment has an effect on family relations, on thehusband's behavior at home and on children's independence.

The data suggestthat mother's employment has an effect on family relations, on thehusband's behavior at home and on children's independence.Foi objetivo do estudo investigar a percepção de mães profissionais e não profissionais com relação às seguintes variáveis: realização da mulher quanto ao trabalho que executa, motivos que a levam a trabalhar, a sua percepção tanto com relação à atitude do marido a respeito do trabalho que realiza quanto com relação à participação do pai nos cuidados com a família e envolvimento com os filhos, à extensão em que a mãe favorece a independência do filho, à principal autoridade na família e técnicas educativas diferenciadas para meninas e meninos. A amostra foi constituída de trinta mães que trabalhavam em tempo integral, trinta mães que trabalhavam em tempo parcial e trinta mães não empregadas. Um questionário foi utilizado para a coleta de dados. Diferenças significativas entre as percepções das mães nos três grupos foram observadas com relação aos diversos aspectos investigados, tendo sido constatado que a principal razão para otrabalho da mãe fora do lar era uma associação da necessidade financeira com realização pessoal. Constatou-se que as mães que permaneciam no lar sentiam-se menos realizadas que as demais e que aquelas que trabalhavam fora percebiam-se como estimulando de uma forma mais intensa a independência dos filhos e como apresentando ainda uma interação mais positiva com os mesmos. Observou-se também que no caso das famílias em que a mulher trabalhava fora, esta percebia o marido como tendo uma participação mais ativa, com um maior envolvimento na educação e socialização da criança. Observou-se ainda que, segundo o relato das mães, as crianças do sexo feminino obedeciam mais às mães que aquelas do sexo masculino, independentemente do trabalho exercido pela mulher.
