INFLUENCE OF GENDER AND AGE IN DRUG USERS OF BRASÍLIA

After surveying the knowledge and consumption ofdrugs among student in Brasilia, the authors make an analysis, in terms of gender and age, of those who have declared being drugusers. Comparisons are made with other epidemiological studieson drug consumption that also refer to gender and age. Concerningthe use of tobacco and alcohol, data show a slightly higherconsumption in the male population. In general, alcohol use ishigher than tobacco, but smokers progress faster. The use of otherdrugs, legal or illegal, presents highly significant differencesaccording to gender. The male population tends to illegal and nonmedicamentaldrugs, being inhalants the most used. The femalepopulation demonstrates a tendency towards medicamentaipsychotropics (tranquilizers, hypnotics and analgesics). Theoccasional use of tranquilizers seems to surpass tryouts. Groupeddata, according to age, contradicts the idea that the tryout of drugcarries to intensified use. Concerning the validity of epidemiologicresearch in general, the conclusion is that results depend on region,local and demographic characteristics of the chosen sample.In orderto reach wider aspects, a completion is needed in other populationalsectors.
