Resumo: The study evaluated the effects of Intensive Behavioral Intervention, conducted through training of caregivers, on the development of children with autism. The analysis was based on data of children treated by a specialized Brazilian center. Participants in Group 1 were 22 children who completed the first year of intensive intervention. Eleven children, who did not receive intensive intervention, were assigned to Group 2, for data analysis purposes. The results indicated significant gains in all areas of the development of children with autism who have gone through the first year of Intensive Behavioral Intervention, while children in the control group showed less impressive gains. Younger children, who spoke and who had milder symptoms of autism, obtained better results.
