The book as an Art Form: Julio Plaza's Contribution to the Production and Theorization of the Artist's Book in Brazil

Resumo: | This article seeks to gather and analyze the contribution of Julio Plaza in the construction of two important questions for the understanding of editorial production: the notion of “independent” focused on the production and circulation of books and the theoretical and conceptual field of the artist's book, seen as product of a certain independent creation practice. Therefore, we investigated Plaza’s theoretical production focused on this theme, published in magazines and newspapers in the 1980s, as well as the critical literature that investigates the Brazilian publishing field today. It was also relevant to approach the concepts of the artist's book in an attempt to understand how the term has been drawn in its theoretical lines. It was noted that the artist's books proved to be products linked to independent modes of production, being, generally, fruits of avant-garde art and poetry, where Plaza was inserted. In this way, it was understood, in this historical rescue of the artist and theorist's performance in the Brazilian publishing field, that self-publishing and self-editing was - and continues to be - a way to “pierce” the bubble of so-called “system editing”. |

Por lo tanto, investigamos la producción teórica de Plaza centrada en este tema, publicada en revistas y periódicos en la década de 1980, así como la literatura crítica que investiga el campo editorial brasileño en la actualidad. También fue relevante abordar los conceptos del libro del artista en un intento por comprender cómo se ha dibujado el término en sus líneas teóricas. Se observó que los libros del artista demostraron ser productos vinculados a modos de producción independientes, siendo, en general, fruto del arte y la poesía de vanguardia, donde se insertó Plaza. De esta manera, se entendió, en este rescate histórico de la actuación del artista y del teórico en el campo editorial brasileño, que la autopublicación y la autoedición eran, y siguen siendo, una forma de “perforar” la burbuja de la llamada “edición sistema”.Este artigo busca reunir e analisar a contribuição de Julio Plaza na construção de duas importantes questões para o entendimento da produção editorial: a noção de “independente” voltada à produção e circulação de livros e o campo teórico e conceitual do livro de artista, visto como produto de certa prática independente de criação. Para tanto, investigamos a produção teórica de Plaza voltada a essa temática, veiculada em revistas e jornais nos anos 1980, assim como a literatura crítica que investiga o campo editorial brasileiro nos dias atuais. Fez-se relevante também abordar os conceitos do livro de artista na tentativa de compreender como o termo vem sendo desenhado em suas linhas teóricas. Notou-se que os livros de artista se mostraram como produtos vinculados a modos independentes de produção, sendo, geralmente, frutos da arte e poesia de vanguarda, onde estava inserido Plaza.
