Resumo: A comparative analysis of recent elections in Latin America indicates acorrelation between economic performance and the degree of institutionalizationof military regimes. The author underlines the importance of "democraticreinvention" or its "restauration" and suggests that interaction betweenthe culture of crisis and political culture is the strategic variable for theinterpretation of results in recent presidential elections and difficulties indemocratic consolidation in Latin America.

L'auteur souligne le rôle de Ia "réinventiondémocratique" ou de sa "restauration" et suggère que le rapport entreculture de crise et culture politique constitue la variable stratégique pourl'interprétation des résultats des Elections et des blocages au processus deconsolidation démocratique en Amérique Latine.Uma análise comparativa de eleições recentes na América Latina permiteconstatar que quanto maior foi o êxito do desempenho econômico noperíodo autoritário, mais consistente e durável foi a institucionalização doregime militar.
