Resumo: The author observes and analyzes some characteristics of theinternal constitution of the Social Sciences while reconstructingits disciplinary and thematic profile, through which institucionaland socio-historical conditions which penetrate the process of theelaboration of knowledge can also be identified. Taking the bookas main empirical instrument and focusing the time span between1945 and 1964 (the period of consolidation of the Social Sciencesin Brazil), the author shows the importance given to the past andits reconstruction as well as to the building of the nation andits modernization. The conclusion is that, despite differencesamong the Social Sciences, the central themes and preoccupationsduring the period were essentially the same.

La conclusion indique que, malgreles differences entre les diverses sciences sociales, lespreoccupations centrales, pendant la période étudiée, sont essentiellementles mêmes.Este artigo observa e analisa características da constituição interna das Ciências Sociais, valendo-se para isso de uma reconstrução do seu perfil disciplinar e temático, através do qual condi_ ções histórico-sociais e institucionais que se inscrevem no proces^ so de elaboração do conhecimento também podem ser reconhecidas. To mando o livro como recurso empírico e as duas décadas de 1945 a 1964 (período de consolidação), mostra-se a importância atribuída ao passado e a sua reconstrução assim como a construção nacional e à modernização.
