Resumo: This paper”s objective is twofold. It aims at: a) presenting the specifics of the way the social problem ofnew religious movements (NRMs) is constructed in Portugal and b) giving a panoramic view of the state of the art in what concerns NRMs studies in this country. To this effect the authors: a) recapitulate relevant historical events, b) present the most relevant autocthonous movements, c) brieflyreview the existing proto-scientific literature, d) comment some events deemed exemplary on the relations of NRMs, Portuguese society, in general, and the mass media, in particular, and e) conclude by presenting the new Law of Religious Freedom and the polemic it feeds.

Il vise: a) presenter leproblème social des nouveaux mouvements réligieux (NMRs) tel que il est construit au Portugal et b) donner une panoramique de I”étude des NMRs dans ce pays. A cet effet les auteurs: a) récapitulent les évènements historiques rélevants, b) present les mouvements autochtones, c) passent en revue brièvement la littérature proto- scientifique existante, d) commentent quelques événements considérés exemplaires sur les relations des NMRs avec la société portugaise, engénéral, et les moyens de communication de masse, ' en particulier, et e) concluent en présentant le sujet de la nouvelle loi de la liberté religieuse et la polemique qui T’entoure.Este artigo procura alcançar um duplo objectivo: a) introduzir a forma como o problema social dos novos movimentos religiosos (NMRs) se configura em Portugal e b) fazer uma panorâmica do estado da arte no que respeita ao seu estudo científico.
