SCHOOLING OF TRANS AND TRANSVESTITE WOMEN:: violence and the effects of friendship bonds

Resumo: The disputes over who can establish a truth about gender are present in various social spaces, and school is one of them. For transvestites and transgender women, school is an environment of difficult permanence, with many and varied episodes of violence by classmates and by the condescension of teachers and administrators. However, it is at school that many of them meet peers and begin to understand about themselves, especially from the bonds of friendship they have built. In this article, based on the experiences of six transvestites and transgender women, we discuss the violence faced, the influence of support from school professionals and, especially, the effects of the bonds developed at school on the schooling of this group. These bonds provide recognition and protection, with effects on the present and future schooling. They do not guarantee linear trajectories and eliminate violence, but they soften it, reduce loneliness and broaden coping strategies, making school less hostile.

Para travestis y transexuales, es un ambiente de difícil permanencia, con muchos y variados episodios de violencia por parte de compañeros de clase y por la condescendencia de profesores y directivos. Sin embargo, también es allí donde muchas conocen a sus pares y comienzan a entenderse a sí mismas, a partir, sobre todo, de los lazos de amistad construidos. En este artículo, basado en las experiencias de seis travestis y mujeres transexuales, discutimos la violencia enfrentada, la influencia del apoyo de los profesionales de la escuela y, especialmente, los efectos de los vínculos desarrollados en la escuela en la escolarización de este grupo. Estos vínculos proporcionan reconocimiento y protección, con efectos en la escolarización presente y futura. No garantizan trayectorias lineares ni eliminan la violencia, pero la suavizan, reducen la soledad y amplían las estrategias de enfrentamiento, tornando la escuela menos hostil.As disputas em torno de quem pode estabelecer sobre o gênero uma verdade estão presentes nos variados espaços sociais, e a escola é um deles. Para travestis e mulheres trans, ela é um ambiente de difícil permanência, com muitos e variados episódios de violência por parte de colegas e pela condescendência de docentes e gestores(as). Entretanto, é lá também que muitas conhecem pares e começam a compreender sobre si, a partir, sobretudo, dos vínculos de amizade construídos. Neste artigo, baseado nas experiências de seis travestis e mulheres trans, discutimos as violências enfrentadas, a influência do apoio de profissionais da escola e, principalmente, os efeitos dos vínculos desenvolvidos na escola na escolarização desse grupo. Esses vínculos fornecem reconhecimento e proteção, com efeitos no presente e no futuro escolar.
