Resumo: Objective: To analyze breastfeeding promotion strategies and factors related to early weaning among mothers, users of a Family Health Strategy in a city in the north of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Method: This is a descriptive, exploratory study of a qualitative nature carried out with 16 mothers. Data were collected between August and September 2020 through a semi-structured interview, analyzed using Content Analysis. Results: The health team encourages breastfeeding through health education and guidance during multidisciplinary care. Even knowing the importance and benefits of breastfeeding, mothers have difficulties to practice breastfeeding due to the presence of fissures and pain in the breasts. They reported early weaning due to low milk production, difficult latch on by the baby and introduction of artificial teats. Conclusions: Mothers are aware of the benefits of breastfeeding through multidisciplinary actions, but these were not enough to prevent early weaning. Widely known causes of early weaning remain rooted in the culture of mothers and it should be routine for health professionals to demystify the factors that negatively influence the promotion of breastfeeding.
