Objective. Describe the characteristics of professional development and identify the continuing education needs and the most important qualifications experienced by nurses that influence their personal leadership. Methods. Exploratory research, under the quantitative approach, based on a case study, with data collection between July and September 2019, with 64 nurses from the municipalities of the 12th Ceará´s Health Regional. Data were collected through a Google Forms® questionnaire and data were analyzed using R software. Results: identified that 60.9% of nurses participated in scientific events; 37.5% have in today's newspapers and magazines their main type of reading; 62.5% frequently access the internet, with the most accessed personal social networks (45.3%). In the last twelve months, 56.2% said they participated in technical-scientific improvement. Of those who did not participate, the main reason was the distance (20.3%). Among the most important qualifications carried out, are topics related to Public Health and Family Health (39%), these were cited by 18.1% as need. Conclusion. Professional development and continuing education are two educational and management tools necessary for the individual and collective work process of nurses in Primary Health Care to strengthen the bond with the community, contribute to the achievement of sustainable development goals and the expansion of health care. universal access to health systems.
