Resumo: The article discusses the origin and rise of the debate about international capital in the Brazilian economic formation, between the inception of the Republican period and the launch of 1964 coup d’etat. This period is divided into “origin”, from the last decade of 19th century to 1930, and “rise”, from the Vargas government to the military government in 1964. The first moment shows the preliminary debates arising from issues regarding the foreign capital dynamic that promoted the initial nationalistic manifestations. As of the 1930 revolution, governments invested in industrialization, but this strategy was never fully autonomous from the utilization of foreign resources. Within in this historical context, Brazilian intellectuals in the 50’s and 60’s started to discuss the foreign versus national capital issues in that new development pattern that was being setting across the country.
