Resumo: We present and analyse in this article a singular case of expression of claimed citizenship as in Stoer et al (2004), which occurred in the Project “Projeto Esporte Cidadão”, originally planned for young people from the community of Soteco, a working class borough situated in Vila Velha, Espírito Santo state. We show how women, the young people´s mothers and grandmothers who they brought to the project, negotiated their entrance and consolidated their presence in the project , whose profile was altered with lighter activities pertinent to their age (stretching, water fitness and floor exercises). Through reports from the leaders of this movement as well as through answers to semi-structured interviews, we were able to notice that cost, quality of equipment and time convenience favored the presence of elderly women, in a project originally intended to young people. The analysis results favor health care and opportunity to be with other people. The average dropout rate of 27% points out reasons such as water temperature of the pool, difficulty to follow the medical exam demand, questions related to personal health and family.
