Postural control in 3 to 11 year-old children with visual impairment

Resumo: This study examined postural control changes in visually impaired children (VI). Twenty-one VI children and 21 without visual impairment (WVI) children, distributed into three age groups (3-5, 6-8 and 9-11 years), stood in an upright quiet stance in two conditions: eyes open (WV) and closed (NV). Mean sway amplitude was calculated for anterior-posterior and medial-lateral directions from two IRED markers attached on the children body. MANOVA revealed an interaction between age and group. WVI children showed a decrease in body sway for the 6-8 year-old group and VI children showed body sway similar between the 3-5 and 9-11 year-old group, but an increase for the 6-8 year-old group. No difference was observed between the WV and NV conditions for the VI children, but the WVI children swayed more in the NV than WV condition. These results suggest that VI children may go through reorganization of the postural control functioning later than WVI children.

Vinte e uma crianças PDV e 21 crianças sem comprometimento visual (SCV), divididas em três grupos (3-5, 6-8 e 9-11 anos), mantiveram a posição ereta em duas condições: olhos abertos (CV) e fechados (SV). Amplitude média de oscilação foi calculada para as direções ântero-posterior e médio-lateral a partir de dois emissores infravermelhos afixados nas crianças. MANOVA revelou interação entre idade e grupo. Crianças SCV apresentaram redução da oscilação corporal na faixa etária de 6-8 anos e crianças PDV apresentaram oscilação corporal similar nas faixas etárias de 3-5 e 9-11 anos mas aumento entre 6-8 anos. Não houve diferença entre condições CV e SV para crianças PDV mas crianças SCV oscilaram mais SV que CV.
