Youthful basketball players’ motivational dimensions: a study by sex

Resumo: Abstract: This research aims to describe and compare the average rates obtained from the assessment of six motivational dimensions controlled by variable sex: Stress’ Control, Health, Sociability, Competitiveness, Aesthetic and Pleasure. Accordingly, a sample of 441 youthful basketball players of both sexes and ages ranging from 13 to 16 years, answered the “Inventário de Motivação à Prática Regular de Atividade Física e/ou Esporte” (IMPRAFE-54). Results indicated, regardless of gender in analysis, the Pleasure is the motivation’ dimension that motivates the most this athletes. Still, the only two dimensions that showed significant differences (p < .05), when sex is controlled, is Competitiveness and Aesthetics. One of the main conclusions is: the boys seem to be more motivated by competition and the girls by the feeling of belonging to a group. New studies must deepen these results, searching to try to explain a cultural explanation for this difference. Key words: Basketball; Youthful athletes. Motivation. Sex. Comparative Study.

Por lo tanto, una muestra de 441 niños y jóvenes deportistas, jugadores de baloncesto de ambos sexos y de edades comprendidas entre los 13 a 16 años, dijo que el inventario de la motivación de la práctica regular de actividad física y / o Deportes (IMPRAFE-54) . Sin embargo, la única dimensión que mostraron diferencias significativas (p Resumo: Esta pesquisa tem por objetivo descrever e comparar os índices médios obtidos a partir da avaliação de seis dimensões motivacionais controladas pela variável Sexo: Controle de Estresse, Saúde, Sociabilidade, Competitividade, Estética e Prazer. Para tanto, uma amostra de 441 atletas infanto-juvenis, jogadores de basquete, de ambos os sexos e com idades variando de 13 a 16 anos, respondeu o Inventário de Motivação à Prática Regular de Atividade Física e/ou Esporte (IMPRAFE-54). Constatou-se que, independente do sexo em análise, a dimensão Prazer é a dimensão que mais motiva os atletas de basquetebol infanto-juvenil. Ainda, as únicas dimensões que apresentaram diferença significativa (p < 0,05), conforme o sexo, foi a Competitividade e a Estética. Uma das principais conclusões é que os atletas infanto-juvenis mostram-se mais motivados pela competição e as atletas pelo sentimento de pertença a um grupo.
