Resumo: This article aims to study the importance of newspapers for the good understanding of the chronicles of Machado de Assis during forty years of journalism production. Two "Balas de Estalo" was selectionneted. Both of them was writed to the newspaper Gazeta de Notícias in 1885; At the first case, a comment of the Victor Hugo"s death; at the second case, a comment of the sadness of Rio de Janeiro, wich lost the italien singer Tamagno.

Foram tomadas como exemplo duas "Balas de Estalo" escritas para o jornal carioca Gazeta de Notícias em 1885: no primeiro caso, um comentário a respeito da morte de Victor Hugo; no segundo caso, uma análise da tristeza do Rio de Janeiro, que teria "perdido" o cantor italiano Tamagno.
