THE HIERARCHY OF THE COLLECTION:: NOTES ON THE PRESENCE OF LUÍZA TÁVORA IN THE COLLECTION OF THE ARQUIVO PÚBLICO DO ESTADO DO CEARÁ (APEC)

This article approaches the relationship between women and the public archive, starting from the documentary collection referring to the public figure of Luíza Távora. Luiza was the First Lady of  Ceará on two occasions (1963-1966 and 1979-1982). Although her image is monumental, naming schools, streets and squares, and despite being remembered as “mother of the poor”, Luíza has no place in the Arquivo Público do Estado do Ceará, except as an addendum to her husband’s Documentary Fund. For her, there is only one sub-series, within the series “personal documents”. This situation makes us think about how gender issues affect women who, despite being white, rich and from traditional families, have their collections built with subordinate entries in the archives dedicated to men.
